Industrial Design Year 2 Furniture Project
Multi-functional table inspired by De-Contructivism, this dining cum study table is unique in its own design. It is three-legged instead of having four found in ordinary tables. Furthermore, it has a glass top supported only by stainless steel poles creating an illusion of imbalance and floatation. The lifestyle of hectic working singles is clearly reflected on the design of the table.
A semi-finalist of the Furniture Design Award (FDA) 2008, and a collaboration with Chia Yuan Ling.
Pinnacle @ Duxton
The Pinnacle@Duxton is a 2.5 hectare Housing Development Board (HDB)residential complex located in the heart of CBD in Singapore. It was an International Architectural Design Competition conducted by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The winning design came from a local firm called ARC Studio Architects + Urbanism. The husband and wife team called their design 'sky houses, flying green' with the aim of giving residents simple and elegant solutions from necessarily low-cost materials. Unique amongst HDB's developments, there are 35 different unit variations for buyers to choose from - with dissimilar combination of features such as extended bays, balconies, bay windows or planter areas. The complex is the first 50 storey public housing project housing 1848 units in 7 blocks. These seven blocks are linked with 2 skybridges on the 26th and 50th floor, each 500m long. The 26th floor skybridge serves as a refuge floor in case of emergencies, and have facilities like the view decks and running track. While the 50th floor skybridge acts as a sky garden offering unblocked views of the city, a feature unique for public housing in Singapore.
Pinnacle@Duxton was the recipient of the 2010 Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia award by the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
BMW GINA Light Visionary Concept
The BMW GINA Concept is a fabric-skinned shape-changing convertible, built around a frame of metal and carbon fiber wires. GINA, designed by Design Chief Chris Bangle, stands for "Geometry and Functions in 'N' Adaptations". Made from stretchable man-made polyurethane-coated spandex, the skeleton of the car is controlled by electro-hydraulic devices allowing it to move and change shape beneath the fabric skin. For instance, the headlights of the concept can be exposed or hidden by the car's skin similar to our blinking eyes, and the hood opens from the center as the fabric parts to expose the engine. This idea extends to the interior, where BMW designers have made visible only those instruments that are required at a certain time, while the rest of the time the same fabric interior "blinks" them out of view. The doors lift up in a semi-scissor fashion and since there are no exposed hinges, the fabric artfully binds up as the door swings open.
